The Evolution of Lara Croft: Why Angelina Jolie Was Replaced in the $703M Franchise

-

Angelina Jolie wowed audiences with her portrayal of Lara Croft in the action-packed film “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider“. Known for performing her own daring stunts, Jolie solidified her reputation as a female action star. However, despite her success in the franchise, Jolie was eventually replaced, leaving fans wondering why.

According to a report by Fandomwire.com, the Lara Croft franchise was the torchbearer of video game adaptations in the film industry. The first movie, released in 2001, brought Jolie on board as the iconic character. Her performance impressed the entire crew, with Jolie fearlessly performing difficult stunts and displaying godlike fitness.
Film director Simon West praised Jolie’s dedication, stating, “Angelina was doing triple back flips on the set. She was doing the bungee jumps from 50 feet up in the air. She was laughing.” Her confidence with heights allowed filmmakers to create thrilling and convincing action sequences.

Despite Jolie‘s success in the first two prequels, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003), she was replaced in the 2018 installment of the franchise. Rumors initially suggested that Jolie was reluctant to continue with the dying franchise as her popularity grew. However, it was later revealed that the decision came from the filmmakers and producers, who no longer saw her as a fit for the role.
Producer Graham King explained, “It was never a story that had that moment where you could, you know what I mean? Pass the baton over. The studios, of course, said ‘is there a way to get Angie?’… That never felt organic to our film. Something like that can tip the balance.”

Ultimately, the $703M Lara Croft franchise decided to replace Jolie with Alicia Vikander in the new sequel. Vikander brought a fresh perspective and fit the vision for the character. While many fans hoped to see Jolie continue in the role due to her dedication and persona, the decision to move on without her was made in order to find a more seamless transition.

Angelina Jolie’s time as Lara Croft allowed her to showcase her talent as an action star, but eventually, the franchise needed a new face. Despite this change, fans can continue to appreciate Jolie’s contributions and dedication to the iconic character, while also embracing Vikander’s take on Lara Croft in future films.
